Trekking on Etna to the 2002 Craters, Hornitos, 1911 and 1923 Fractures

Itinerary

Start of the  trek  along the dirt road that leads from  Piano Provenzana  to the summit craters of the volcano, after the first kilometer you cross the eruptive fracture of the eruption of  October 27, 2002 on the path of “Monte Nero – Timpa Rossa”.

The route allows you to visit and study the many volcanic morphologies related to the eruptions that occurred on the northern side of Etna, in particular the flank eruptions of 10 September 1911  and  17 June 1923  which threatened the town of Linguaglossa.

After visiting the particular volcanic morpho-structures called  Hornitos from the  Spanish  “Little Oven” , we will go up along the pyroclastic cones of the 2002 eruption until reaching the maximum altitude of 2100 m on the edge of the craters, and then descend inside a sandy channel to the starting point.

The route has a total length of  4.5 km .

Warnings

Departures scheduled when a minimum of 6 people are reached

The trek does not require great physical preparation, it is easy and does not have particularly difficult passages, however  attention is required  as it is on volcanic soil, often inconsistent and unstable.

Trekking is  not recommended  for those who are used to little physical activity.

The excursion may be subject to changes at the discretion of the Guides or be interrupted if environmental, atmospheric or volcanic conditions change, which could compromise the  safety  of the entire group.

The total duration of the trek will depend on your pace.

The excursion will take place within the limits set by the  ordinances  in force.

Suitable for children aged 6 and over.

The route includes climbing and passing along the crater rims, which could cause  vertigo problems  for sensitive individuals.

This itinerary, in relation to its typology, is suitable for people in good physical health, who do not suffer from particular pathologies ( cardiovascular ,  respiratory  or  hypertension ).

We advise against  the use of  contact lenses  because of the gases released by the volcano and the ash which, if blown, could easily cause discomfort to the ocular surface.

Pregnant women who are beyond the third month of  pregnancy are not permitted to engage in any type of hiking activity.

To ensure the success of the excursion and the correct performance of the activity, it is good practice to know your  health conditions perfectly  and to inform the Guide if necessary, all this to reduce the onset of any problems and avoid running  risks .

Tips for a Safe and Comfortable Hike

When planning a hike, it is essential to prepare properly to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Here is a list of items to consider, with a focus on the top five.

1. Layer your clothing

Wearing layers is essential to adapt to temperature changes during your hike. A short-sleeved shirt, a long-sleeved thermal shirt, and a fleece or sweatshirt will allow you to adjust your thermal comfort based on the weather conditions.

2. Trekking Shoes

A good pair of hiking shoes is essential for your safety and comfort. These shoes offer support and grip, reducing the risk of injury on uneven terrain.

3. Windbreaker or Down Jacket

Choosing the right jacket that can protect you from the wind or the cold is crucial. Depending on the season, a light windbreaker or a heavier down jacket can make the difference in keeping you warm and dry.

4. Water – Minimum 1 Liter per Person

Staying hydrated is vital during any physical activity. Be sure to bring at least a liter of water per person to avoid dehydration and keep your energy up.

5. Gloves or Hat

Especially in winter, spring and autumn, gloves and hat are essential to protect you from the cold. These accessories help maintain body heat and prevent discomfort during hiking.

In addition to the five items mentioned above, also consider bringing:

Snack: to recharge your batteries during the journey.

Trekking poles: useful for improving balance.

25/30 L backpack: to comfortably carry everything you need.

Sunglasses: To protect your eyes from UV rays.

Sunscreen / cocoa butter: essential for protecting your skin.

Spare socks: in case of sweat or humidity.

Long trousers: to protect your legs.

Rain jacket: additional protection against the elements.

Spare T-shirt: useful if you sweat a lot.

Be well prepared and enjoy your outdoor adventure!
