Itinerary

Our starting point is Piano Provenzana (1,800 m) on the northern slope of Mount Etna. The trek begins along the Monte Nero trail, passing through the eruptive fracture of October 27, 2002, and over the lava flows from the 1923 eruption.

After crossing the lava fields, we’ll enter the magnificent beech forest of Timpa Rossa, where we’ll take a break at the mountain hut that bears the same name.

We’ll then continue over the lava flows from February 24, 1947, and finally over those from 1614–1624, which feature spectacular and unique volcanic formations with slab-like and rope-like shapes, typically known by the Hawaiian term pahoehoe.

The vast lava field includes several lava flow channels, one of which is the Grotta dei Lamponi (1,720 m). Inside this lava tube—one of the longest on Etna, extending over 700 meters—you’ll be able to admire fascinating speleological features.

After visiting the cave, the return will follow the same trail back to Piano Provenzana, unless the guide decides otherwise, in which case the return will be to Rifugio Ragabo.

Tips and Warnings for the Trekking to the Grotta dei Lamponi – Etna

Warnings

Departures available with a minimum of 6 participants

This trekking requires good physical fitness. The trail is generally manageable and free of difficult passages, but caution is still necessary due to the volcanic terrain.

The hypogean environment (lava tube) may cause claustrophobia in sensitive individuals; if this occurs, it must be immediately communicated to the guide.

The excursion may be modified or interrupted at the discretion of the guides in case of environmental, weather, or volcanic changes that could compromise the safety of the group.

The total duration of the hike will depend on the group’s pace.

The excursion will be conducted within the limits of current official regulations.

Also suitable for children over the age of 8.

This itinerary is designed for people in good physical health, and not suitable for those with cardiovascular, respiratory issues, or hypertension.

The use of contact lenses is discouraged due to ash, which, if blown by the wind, may cause irritation.

Pregnant women beyond the third month are not allowed to take part in any hiking activity.

To ensure the smooth progress and safety of the excursion, it is important to be aware of your physical condition and inform the guide if necessary—this helps to reduce risks and avoid possible issues.

Plan a Safe and Comfortable Excursion

For a safe and comfortable excursion, it’s essential to be properly prepared with the right gear. We recommend bringing:

Packed lunch – Essential to maintain your energy throughout the hike.

Layered clothing – Short-sleeved shirt, long-sleeved thermal shirt, and a fleece or sweatshirt. Layering allows you to easily adjust to temperature changes during the ascent.

Hiking boots – Proper footwear is indispensable for walking on uneven terrain. If you don’t have your own, you can rent them on-site for just €5 per pair.

Headlamp or flashlight – Useful for visibility in case of unexpected changes in the hike schedule.

K-way (rain jacket) – Essential to protect you from rain or wind.

Windbreaker or down jacket – Depending on the season, an appropriate jacket will protect you from the cold, especially at higher altitudes.

Gloves or hat – Crucial in the colder months (autumn, winter, spring).

Water – Bring at least 1.5 liters to stay hydrated throughout the hike.

25/30 L backpack – To comfortably carry all your essentials.

Trekking poles – To improve balance along the trail.

Sunscreen – To protect your skin from UV rays.

Sunglasses – To protect your eyes from intense sunlight.

Spare socks – To keep your feet dry and comfortable.

Long pants – To protect your legs from thorns and wind.

Waterproof jacket – To stay dry in case of rain.

Spare t-shirt – To change if you feel sweaty or damp.

Bandana or scarf – To protect against dust and sun.
