Itinerary

The starting point is Piano Provenzana at 1,800 meters, on the northern slope of Mount Etna. From there, the route leads to the Monte Nero trail, built along the eruptive fracture of October 27, 2002, which destroyed the tourist area of Piano Provenzana, and crosses lava flows from the 1923 eruption.

After crossing the lava fields, we’ll enter the magnificent beech forest of Timpa Rossa, where we’ll stop at the Timpa Rossa mountain hut.

Past the hut, we’ll hike over lava flows from both recent eruptions, such as the one from February–March 1947, and older flows dating back to 1614–1624. Here, you’ll see spectacular volcanic morphologies, such as pahoehoe lava (a Hawaiian term), with smooth, rope-like surfaces, and fascinating globular formations called “Monti dei Morti.”

These lava structures are also known as “Dammusi,” an Arabic term meaning ceiling or cover.

At an altitude of 2,030 meters, we will reach the Grotta del Gelo, where we’ll step inside to admire its size, beauty, and above all, the permanent ice that fills the cave year-round—sometimes forming true stalactites and stalagmites.

The return will follow the same trail back to Piano Provenzana, unless the guide evaluates an alternative ending at Rifugio Ragabo.

Tips and Warnings for the Trekking to the Grotta del Gelo – Etna

Warnings

Departures available with a minimum of 6 participants

This excursion is highly recommended for experienced hikers, accustomed to walking in the mountains regularly.

We do not recommend this trek to those who may find it too demanding, given the length of the route, which mainly involves crossing multiple lava flows from various eruptions.

The hike is suitable for individuals with decent fitness levels and proper gear. While the path is generally manageable and free of exposed passages, caution is required due to the volcanic terrain, which is often loose and unstable.

The itinerary may be altered or interrupted at the discretion of the guides if environmental, weather, or volcanic conditions change in a way that may compromise the safety of the group.

The total duration of the trek will depend on the pace of the group.

The hike will be carried out within the limits set by current regulations.

Also suitable for children aged 12 and over.

This itinerary is intended for people in good physical health, and not recommended for those with cardiovascular, respiratory issues, or hypertension.

Contact lens use is discouraged due to volcanic gases and ash, which can cause discomfort if blown into the eyes.

The underground environment (Grotta del Gelo) may trigger claustrophobia in sensitive individuals; if this occurs, it must be reported to the guide immediately.

Pregnant women beyond the third month are not allowed to participate in any hiking activity.

To ensure a safe and successful excursion, it’s important to know your own physical condition and inform the guide of any issues, in order to reduce the risk of complications during the activity.

Plan a Safe and Comfortable Excursion

When planning a hike, it’s essential to be well-prepared to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Here’s a list of key items to consider, with special attention to the top five essentials:

1. Layered Clothing

Wearing layered clothing is crucial to adapt to temperature changes during the hike. A short-sleeved shirt, a long-sleeved thermal top, and a fleece or sweatshirt will allow you to regulate your body temperature based on weather conditions.

2. Hiking Boots

A good pair of hiking boots is vital for your safety and comfort. They provide support and grip, reducing the risk of injury on uneven or rugged terrain.

3. Windbreaker or Down Jacket

Choosing a jacket that protects you from wind and cold is essential. Depending on the season, a light windbreaker or a heavier down jacket can make all the difference in keeping you warm and dry.

4. Water – Minimum 1 Liter per Person

Staying hydrated is key during any physical activity. Be sure to carry at least one liter of water per person to avoid dehydration and maintain your energy.

5. Gloves or Hat

Especially in winter, spring, and autumn, gloves and a hat are indispensable to protect you from the cold. These accessories help retain body heat and prevent discomfort during the hike.

Additional Items to Bring:

Snacks: To replenish energy during the hike

Trekking poles: Useful for added balance and stability

25/30 L backpack: To carry all your gear comfortably

Sunglasses: To protect your eyes from UV rays

Sunscreen / Lip balm: Essential for skin and lip protection

Spare socks: In case of sweat or dampness

Long pants: To protect your legs from scrapes or insects

Waterproof jacket: Extra protection against the elements

Spare t-shirt: Useful if you sweat a lot
